Mushroom Kingdom

Mario Sprite
Kirby Sprite

Mushroom Kingdom Description:

This is a stage for platforming fans. While the pipes are not functional yet, in the final version they will be used as transportation from one side to the next. Sometimes you need to avoid your opponent and conjure up a new strategy. The pit in the center of the stage can be dangerous. You can jump through the bridge, thus giving you higher ground and an advantage.

Bullet Bill Hazards:

Bullet Bill
From time to time, you'll hear a canon being fired and following that sound will be a bullet bill blasting across the screen like a rocket! Hey Bill, stay out of this! This match is between him and me!

Design:

For the Mushroom Kingdom, I wanted to use resources from the first level of Super Mario Brothers, because that tileset is most familiar with players. One thing I knew I had to add, however, were the brilliant mushroom sprites found in level 4-3. I wanted it to be a pleasant terrain. One that could be viewed as an inviting vista to the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, yet serve as a battlefield at the same time. I believe I have found a near perfect blend of background objects and placement of platforms. I had difficulty creating this stage initially. I had an idea of how I wanted this stage to look, but putting the pieces together correctly was a method of trial and error.

Throughout development of this stage, I had sketched multiple layouts on paper and placed random tiles in a blank game room. The first realization was oversaturated with background objects. It took many tries and editing. It was the last of the arenas in the demo that was completed.

When most people think of the Mushroom Kingdom, red bricks and pipes come to mind moreso than actual mushrooms. Odd that the mushroom platforms were only featured in one standard level, and another that was a hidden area!
